Travels in Alaska: (Book with Original Drawings and Photographs) offers a memorable travelogue, enhanced with illustrations from John Muir’s sketchbook from his trips to Alaska in 1879, 1880, and 1890. A draft of his book “Travels in Alaska” was open on his bed stand when he died on Christmas Day, 1914, a final testament to the transformation of a man who not only loved the wilderness with all his being, but discovered his own common humanity within a culture other than his own.

The foreword comes from Daniel Lee Henry, Across the Shaman’s River (2017), who discusses Muir’s encounter with the Chilkat and Chilkoot Tlingit tribes. The introduction is written by filmmaker Michael M. Conti, who has sailed the Inside Passage in search of the landscape that some refer to as “Yosemite by the Sea. Muir’s commentary ranges from observations on the geology of Glacier Bay, to the history and culture of the Chinook people, to his discovery of the great glacier that was subsequently named for him. The naturalist captures the region’s grandeur and beauty with the same fervor he expressed for the Sierras, making this book a must for nature lovers and adventurous travelers.

John Muir (1838-1914) ranks among America’s most Important and influential environmentalists and nature writers. Also known as “John of the Mountains,” Muir was a naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, Sierra Club founder, and dedicated advocate for the preservation of natural resources and the wild places in the United States. Through his activism, this wilderness champion became a pioneer. Muir’s spirit and legacy live on in our national parks, wilderness areas, wildlife refuges, hiking trails, and forests. An ecological prophet and Christian mystic, Muir profoundly shaped how we understand and envision our relationship with the natural world. His work has become a personal guide into the natural world for countless individuals. This book, one of his most popular works, will delight environmentalists and nature lovers with its exuberant observations of Alaska and its inhabitants.
