Director brings John Muir film to Moab

April 4, 2019

As a kid growing up in Boulder, Colorado, filmmaker Michael M. Conti could not quite explain the feeling that overcame him from spending his childhood outdoors.

Until, at age 14, he read John Muir’s “My First Summer in the Sierra” which, he said, communicated his sentiments exactly.

Now, Conti has created and directed a 70-minute film called “The Unruly Mystic: John Muir” exploring the life of one of America’s most renowned wilderness defenders.

New documentary reveals environmental wisdom of John Muir

January 24, 2019

New film explores ‘John of the Mountains’

‘Oh, these vast, calm, measureless mountain days, days in whose light everything seems equally divine, opening a thousand windows to show us God,” said John Muir, the Scottish-American who founded the Sierra Club and was affectionately known as “John of the Mountains” while widely hailed as the “Father of the National Parks.”

For those of us who live at the foot of the southern Sangre de Cristos, who would disagree with Muir when each morning we’re greeted by Pueblo Peak towering over us in its wintry magnificence? Who would disagree with him after an exhilarating day on the slopes of Taos Ski Valley? Our mountains are indeed woven into the fabric of our lives, perhaps more than we even realize.

Independent filmmaker Michael M. Conti will be in town with his latest documentary, which stands as both an affirmation of our good fortune and a reminder for us to heed our connectivity to the bounty of nature surrounding us.

This Boulder Filmmaker Taps Into John Muir’s Spiritualism In A New Documentary

Naturalist John Muir is known for his very  tangible accomplishments.

Muir led the crusade in the late 1800s to preserve stretches of natural land, including what would become Yosemite Natural Park, and he founded the Sierra Club.

But it was Muir’s spiritual side that Boulder filmmaker Michael M. Conti set out to explore in a new documentary. Conti traveled to various national parks and other stretches of wilderness for “The Unruly Mystic: John Muir,” which screens at the Lyric Cinema in Fort Collins on Thursday, Jan. 24.

Conti talked to Colorado Matters about Muir’s dual connection to nature and spiritualism.

Earth Month Tour 2019 Press Release

Michael M. Conti Productions / Crazy Wisdom Films

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“The Unruly Mystic™: John Muir” documentary film to premiere in California, Utah and Nevada

(Director available for talkback after screenings in San Francisco, Albany, Yosemite National Park, Auburn, University of the Pacific – Stockton, Tahoe City, Martinez, College of the Sequoias – Visalia, Moab – Utah, University of Nevada – Reno)

(BOULDER, CO April 2019) The inspirational new documentary by filmmaker Michael M. Conti, “The Unruly Mystic: John Muir” will be screening in seven states, 20 cities and has over 30 screenings scheduled as part of Earth Month and John Muir’s Birthday.

“The Unruly Mystic™: John Muir” explores the remarkable life and influential works of a patron saint of environmental activism. The film discusses the connection between nature and spirituality, using the life and wisdom of John Muir, ecological preservationist and founder of Yosemite National Park, as a catalyst for how being outside in nature affects the lives of everyday people right now. Muir played many roles in his life: mystic, prophet, author, poet, conservationist, radical, all of which helped him succeed in his role as an advocate for Nature. As America’s most famous naturalist and conservationist, Muir fought to protect the wild places he loved. Muir’s writings have profoundly shaped the ways in which we understand and envision our relationship with the natural world today, and his work has become a personal guide into the natural world for countless individuals. The film interviews noted psychiatrists, theologians, writers, members of the National Park Service, and everyday people, and asks them to discuss their relationship with nature, and its transformative effect in their lives.

“The Unruly Mystic: John Muir” is 70 minutes long. Director Michael M. Conti will be in attendance for a short Q & A after the film, and will be joined by producer Heather Boyle, at the California, Utah and Nevada screenings.

About Crazy Wisdom Films (CWF): Every generation when finding its own voice also rediscovers the teachers, mystics, geniuses, misfits, rebels, troublemakers from the past.  CWF strives to celebrate those previous unruly mystics who stood strong, brave, open and everlasting awake, and who continue to inspire and challenge the status quo. Each film is crafted to be appealing to a multi-generational audience, from the twenty something-spiritual seekers to the gray-haired elders who seek a deeper wisdom on the subject.  The films are a reminder of the common good and universal connection that we all have to the earth and to spirit, and that those connections are stronger and deeper than merely one nation, religion, race, class or gender. The first film in the series is “The Unruly Mystic: Saint Hildegard”.
