William Frederic Badè
The author and editor, William Frederic Badè, was an American clergyman, historian, and author. He is best known for his work as the editor of The Life and Letters of John Muir, a two-volume set that collects letters written by John Muir during the most exuberant period of his life, from 1868 to 1903. This book was published after Muir’s death. Badè also wrote several other books, including The Life of Jesus, The Life of St. Paul, and The Life of Abraham Lincoln. He was born in 1871 and died in 1936.
John Muir

He is best known for his work as a conservationist and his writings on the natural world, which have inspired countless people to appreciate and protect the environment. Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland in 1838 and emigrated to the United States with his family when he was 11 years old. He spent much of his life exploring and studying the wilderness, particularly in California and the Sierra Nevada mountains. Muir is often referred to as the “father of the national parks,” as his efforts played a key role in the creation of many of the protected areas in the United States. He co-founded the Sierra Club, a prominent environmental advocacy organization, and his writings, including My First Summer in the Sierra and The Mountains of California, continue to be widely read and admired. Muir died in 1914 at the age of 76.
